Three hurt in racist attackThree hurt in racist attack
Monday, 20th June 2005

Three Polish men were treated in a hospital after being hurt in what police believe was a racist attack.

One of the men was struck on the head with a block of wood during the attack in Lisnaskea, County Fermanagh.

The victims, all in their 20s, were returning to their home in Carrowshee Park when they were attacked by a group of four men who smashed their way into the house.

A front living room window and a section of the front door were destroyed.

The other victims sustained minor injuries to the legs and arms.

The attack was condemned by unionist and nationalist politicians in the area.

Democratic Unionist Assembly member for Fermanagh and South Tyrone, Arlene Foster, said: "I condemn it wholeheartedly and would advise anyone with information to go to the police investigating it."

Nationalist SDLP Assembly member Tommy Gallagher added: "We have a growing number of people from other countries, particularly from Poland and Latvia, now living in the area," he said.

"They are welcome in Fermanagh as far as the vast majority of people are concerned. Indeed, in parts of the county, weekend events have been held celebrating Polish music and culture.

"So this is very disturbing. I hope we are not going to see incidents of this kind becoming more widespread."
