Monday, 24th January 2005

Mrs Irene Heba Hughes, from Lisnaskea, was joined by family and friends when she celebrated her one hundredth birthday last week. Originally from Lurgan, Irene married the late John Hughes of Castleblaney and they moved to Fermanagh in 1937. John took up the post of managing the brickworks and estate at Necarne Castle until the family moved to Ballindarragh, Lisnaskea, where Irene joined the Women's Institute. She has contributed much throughout her lifetime, she was on the County Education Committee, served as a member of the Board of Governors at the Collegiate Grammar, and was Vice Chair of the Technical Committee in Fermanagh. Irene's secrets to a long healthy life; don't smoke or drink, keep active, and live a healthy and balanced lifestyle.
