Ireland beat Italy in hard fought win
Sunday, 15th February 2009

Italy - 9

Ireland - 38

Don't be fooled by the scoreline, this was a tough and bruising encounter in Rome today. Italy had much the better of the early exchanges, leading by 6-0 and 9-7 throughout most of the first half. Ireland's first score came from an intercept pass, well taken by Tommy Bowe, and then, just on the stroke of half-time, Luke Fitgerald burst through the Italian defence to give Ireland a 14-9 lead at the break.

ireland stepped up a gear after the break and when David Wallace scored early on, it looked as if Ireland might pull away. But they couldn't. In fact, it wasn't until the last 5 minutes when two quick tries by Luke Fitgerald and Brian O Driscoll gave the scoreboard a more flattering look.
