Kerry Finally Put Cork to the Sword
Sunday, 31st August 2008

August 31st, Croke Park :

All-Ireland SFC Semi-Final
Tyrone 0-23 Wexford 1-14

All-Ireland SFC Semi-Final Replay
Kerry 3-14 Cork 2-13

In two pulsating semi-finals in Croke Park today, Kerry finally managed to shake free of Cork and Tyrone ended Wexford's dream to set up a repeat of the 2005 All Ireland Football final.

For the second week running and the third time in this championship, Kerry looked to be cruising against Cork, leading by 2-12 to 1-6 early in the second half. Incredibly, Cork came thundering back to draw level at 2-12 apiece with less than 5 minutes remaining and the three in a row looked over for The Kingdom. But up stepped the coolest head on the pitch, Colm 'The Gooch' Cooper, to calmly slide the ball past the Cork keeper and onrushing Cork defence into the goal to bring his tally for the day to 1-7, and finally put an end to Cork's comeback.

In the second semi-final, Wexford rallied from a poor start when they went 10-2 down to come back in the second half to within 4 points. Tyrone always looked in control however and pulled away towards the end to win by 6 points. The loss of Sean Kavanagh with a broken hand in the second half may yet prove to be a big loss for Tyrone.

And so the stage is set for a mouth watering final in 3 weeks time and who will win is anybody's guess. The edge may be with Kerry as they will have Darragh O Se and Paul Galvin to add to their squad from today... time will tell !
