Trappatoni era begins with a draw in friendly
Monday, 19th May 2008

The Republic of Ireland drew 1-1 with Portuguese club side Portimonese in a training match at Portimao today. Substitute Andy Keogh's 49th minute equaliser cancelled out a first half effort from Gonzalo.

After the game Giovanni Trapattoni said: It was good opportunity to see the players in action.

"At this stage, after just a few days together, the players are still thinking about things rather than playing instinctively.

"Their mentality is good but there is still work to be done to change some of their habits.

"The pitch was not good and some of the passes which normally would have been accurate were not. I didnt expect any more today because we were missing six senior players.

Ireland will play another training match tomorrow evening against Lagos at 8pm in the Municipal Stadium.

Republic of Ireland: Kiely (J Murphy 62); Kelly, Bruce, McShane, Delaney; Duff (capt) (Keogh 46), Miller (Whelan 70), Rowlands (Potter 72), Hunt (Hoolahan 70); D Murphy (Long 57), Doyle (Scannell 74).
