Irish Rugby and Soccer Teams Have Poor Weekend
Thursday, 13th September 2007

Not our greatest weekend really.

On Saturday night the Irish soccer team seem to have scrambled a performance together and were minutes away from pulling off a much needed away win, to keep their hopes of qualification for Euro 2008 alive. That was, until, the Slovakian full back, Cech, ran on to a pass just outside the area in injury time, striking a well hit shot to Shay Given's left and into the net, levelling the scores 2-2. Ireland really needed the win but just couldn't do enough to close the game out. A bit unlucky in some respects but a win might have flattered to deceive.

Surely then, our rugby heroes, would be able to lift the spirits on Sunday evening, playing their full strength side against the lowly ranked Namibians. Not quite... the expected 50 point plus margin never materialised, Ireland scraping through 32-17. And even that was with a dubious try late on.

Ireland never settled, never got going. They seemed to be putting themselves under a lot of pressure, trying to force the issue, knowing that perhaps points difference might be important in finally deciding the 'Group of Death'. What they seemed to forget however is that you need to kill of the opposition first, in a settled and controlled manner, before you start looking to accumulate points. Forcing passes, not committing forwards to the breakdown, dropping passes, missing touch - a litany of errors that seemed to get worse as the night wore on.

Time is running out for this Irish team - and what an absolute shame that would be. They'll have Georgia on their minds now - it will be interesting to see how the Argies play against them this evening.
